Charity holds a special place in Islam. It is not just an act of kindness but a core value that strengthens faith, purifies wealth, and supports those in need. Islam teaches that giving is not a loss but a way to earn rewards in this life and the Hereafter. It encourages individuals to think beyond their own needs and focus on others, ultimately connecting them to Allah. Charity is mentioned dozens of times in the Quran. The passages below are only from the second chapter, Surah Al-Baqarah in Ayat no 2:274
Allah SWT describes
“Those who spend their wealth in charity day and night, secretly and openly—their reward is with their Lord, and there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.”.
The forms of Charity
In Islam, charity is highly emphasized, and it can take various forms. Some common types of charity are Zakat and Sadaqah.
Zakat: The Obligatory Charity: Zakat is a compulsory form of charity in Islam, requiring Muslims to donate 2.5% of their savings to those in need, such as the poor, orphans, and debt-ridden individuals. It purifies wealth, promotes financial equality, and serves as a safety net for the less fortunate. In chapter nine Sura AL Tawba Verse no 103 Allah Says
(O Prophet), take sadaqah (zakat) out of their property-thou wouldst cleanse them and purify them thereby
Sadaqah: The Voluntary Charity: Sadaqah is an optional form of charity that can be given in any amount and form, including money, food, or a kind word. It brings blessings, removes hardship, and strengthens community bonds, with no fixed amount or time, allowing for continuous generosity. The Prophet ﷺ explained this in a hadith narrated by Ka’b bin Ujrah,
“Salat is clear proof, and Sawm (fasting) is an impregnable shield, and Sadaqah (charity) extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire.” [Jami’ at-Tirmidhi].
How giving strengthens faith and the community
Giving in charity is an act of faith that deepens one’s connection with Allah. It reminds Muslims of their responsibilities towards others and reinforces the values of compassion and gratitude. Through charity, communities grow stronger as individuals support one another, creating a sense of unity and shared purpose. When people give, they spread positivity, reduce inequality, and contribute to social harmony.
The Rewards of Giving
Allah loves those who do good, “And do good, for Allah certainly loves the good-doers” (Qur’an 2: 195), and giving sadaqah is part of it. The Quran and Hadith emphasize that sincerely giving in charity brings numerous blessings, purifying wealth and heart from greed, bringing inner peace, increasing blessings, strengthening community bonds, and contributing to a just society.
Also Giving in charity brings many blessings. who give sincerely will receive rewards from Allah.7 benefits of giving sadaqah, as described in the Qur’an and Sunnah. Those are
1) Your sadaqah is multiplied by 700 by Allah.
Allah is indeed the Most Generous. He promised to multiply your rewards by 700-fold, or even more for whom He wills when you give sadaqah for the sake of Allah
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. (Qur’an 2: 261)
2) Those who regularly give sadaqah will be called to enter Jannah from Baab as-Sadaqah
Regularly giving sadaqah to family, orphans, or those in need through services, kind words, or monetary gifts is considered a way of Allah, leading to the entrance to Jannah through the Baab as-Sadaqah.
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Anybody who spends a pair of something in the cause of Allah will be called from all the gates of Paradise, ‘O Allah’s slave! This is good.’ He who is amongst those who pray will be called from the gate of the prayer (in Paradise) and he who is from the people of Jihad will be called from the gate of Jihad, and he who is from those who give in charity will be called from the gate of charity, and he who is amongst those who observe fast will be called from the gate of fasting, the gate of Raiyan.” (Sahih Bukhari)
3)Sadaqah helps Muslims to gain taqwa.
Taqwa, or fear of Allah, drives Muslims to obey Allah’s commands and avoid evil. By practicing sadaqah, we can achieve taqwa and become the noblest in Allah’s eyes.
“You will never achieve taqwa until you donate some of what you cherish. And whatever you give is certainly well known to Allah.” (Qur’an 3: 92)
4)For those who offer sadaqah, there will be no fear or sorrow.
Allah assures those who invest their wealth in His path that they will not experience fear or grief, and their reward is with Him, providing the assurance and protection needed for life after death.
“Those who spend their wealth in charity day and night, secretly and openly—their reward is with their Lord, and there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.” (Qur’an 2: 274)
5)Sadaqah removes our sins just like water mitigate fire
Sadaqah, a beloved deed by Allah, offers significant rewards to its doers in the Hereafter, as it expiates sins like water extinguishes fire.
Narrated by Ka’b bin Ujrah, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Salat is clear proof, and Sawm (fasting) is an impregnable shield, and Sadaqah (charity) extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire.” (Tirmidhi).
6)Those who give sadaqah so secretly will be among those shaded by Allah on the day of judgement
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Seven (people) will be shaded by Allah by His Shade on the Day of Resurrection when there will be no shade except His Shade. (They will be), a just ruler, a young man who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, a man who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tears, a man whose heart is attached to mosques (offers his compulsory congregational prayers in the mosque), two men who love each other for Allah’s Sake, a man who is called by a charming lady of noble birth to commit illegal sexual intercourse with her, and he says, ‘I am afraid of Allah,’ and (finally), a man who gives in charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given.
7)One of the three good deeds that remains beyond death is sadaqah jariyah.
When we die, we will leave everything behind. All our good deeds will also come to an end, except for three. Sadaqah jariyyah, or a continuous and ongoing charity, such as partaking in the building of a mosque, a school, a well, among others, planting trees and giving one a copy of the Qur’an, is one of the good deeds that follows us to the grave. The rewards of our sadaqah jariyyah remain for as long as it is used.
Narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said:
“When a man dies all his good deeds come to an end except three: Ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge and a righteous son who prays for him.”
Charity is righteousness and Allah describes righteousness as that you give from the things that you love. Not from the things that you don’t like, but from the things that you love. As long as you help others, Allah SWT will help you. That is such a simple, yet powerful statement!
